What is the Southern Counties Scrabble® League?
The Southern Counties Scrabble League was started in 1984 by Michael Partner after a most successful friendly match between the scrabble clubs of Southampton and Croydon.
Tournaments were few and far between at the time and idea of a League provided a platform for scrabblers to meet for play and social exchange. 1985 saw the first official season kick off with 15 participating teams, each totalling just four members.
The League expanded over the years and by the mid 1990's, 47 teams were taking part playing in 6 divisions: Div 1, Div2 East, Div 2 West, Div 3 Central, Div3 West and Div 3 East. This meant that new teams could join the league and play at a gentle level to start with.
Over the years as many more day tournaments and scrabble holidays have been arranged in our area, club membership has fallen and so has the number of teams in the League.
But today the League continues to draw teams of scrabble enthusiasts from across the south and south east. New teams are welcome and it’s not necessary to be part of an established club. Matches are usually played in the home of a member of the home team.
A group of four scrabble playing friends can get themselves listed as a closed club on the national list by emailing Philip Nelkon at philip.nelkon@mattel.com
So if you enjoy the game and think you might like form a small club team or make an existing informal scrabble group official – please do contact Philip. We would be delighted to welcome your new team into the League.
If you have any questions about the League, please contact Ruth Marsden.
